The first fiver
A paper round, a widow, and the Commodore PET her late husband left behind. First paid computer job. £5.
I had a paper round when I was about eleven or twelve. It was OK. I sometimes put the papers in the wrong doors, because I’d got lost in my thoughts — an entire street, once! Dave and Sandra were very forgiving. They were also the last chance saloon. Anyway, they knew I was good with computers, and that I liked them.
So they asked me to visit a retired teacher whose husband had passed away. She needed help using his computer to print things out. I showed her how to use it, fixed the printer, and got it all working.
She was there with me, and I showed her.
I got a fiver. Spent it on sweets and a Speccy mag — Sinclair User or Crash!, I don’t remember which.
